As a volunteer at the NC AWWA-WEA’s 5th Annual Model Water Tower Competition, HIGHFILL’s Breanne Long, EI, helped show children that engineering can be fun for all ages.
Hosted at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Raleigh, NC, the ultimate goal of the competition is to introduce basic water tower design and drinking water distribution concepts to elementary and middle school-aged youths.
“It’s important that students are exposed to a variety of career paths within the engineering field,” explains Breanne. “It’s our hope that some of them may be inspired to continue studying civil engineering and eventually become professionals in the water industry.”
While the purpose of the competition may be to inspire kids to pursue careers in engineering, Breanne acknowledges that the adults may also have a thing or two to learn from the students.
“I was very impressed by the creativity of the students. Some of towers were really works of art.”
